Anthonis van Dyck
(Antwerp 1599 – 1641 Blackfriars/London), workshop of
The Virgin and Child, oil on canvas, 102.5 x 82.5 cm, framed
Provenance: Private Noble Collection, West Germany
Certificate: Univ. Prof. Dr. Justus Müller Hofstede, 9 September 1989, as an autograph and excellently preserved work by Anthony van Dyck. Prof. Müller Hofstede writes: “The present Madonna is a famous composition by Van Dyck that is primarily known through a version of high quality in the picture gallery at Dulwich College near London. For this latter version, see Dr. Gustav Glück, Klassiker der Kunst, Van Dyck, Stuttgart /Berlin 1931, repr. p. 234, as dating from 1630–32.
In the present painting, the heads – the head of the Madonna and the head of the Christ Child – were executed by Anthony van Dyck himself. The master’s hand reveals itself in the delicate colouristic treatment of the complexion in both figures, the subtle modelling of the flesh with blushes and shadows, and the highlights in the figures’ eyes.”
